Topical Summary on Respect for Human Rights

Related Core Principle

2. Respect for human rights

The Framework calls for companies to establish strong human rights commitments in accordance with international instruments including the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, ILO Fundamental Conventions, and UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Core Principle 2 specifies what should be included in a commitment or policy to respect human rights, with a focus on the rights of workers and of indigenous peoples and local communities.

Consistent with accepted processes of human rights due diligence, the Framework guides companies to identify adverse impacts to human rights; act on these findings by ceasing, preventing, or mitigating these impacts; and provide for or cooperate in remediation when appropriate. Several of the Framework’s Operational guidance documents (linked below) identify best practices for these activities.
The topical briefing on human rights provides an overview of the Framework’s positions and guidance on setting and implementing goals to respect human rights.
